NOMADS’ NEW YEAR – WHITE MOON HOLIDAY
Overview

This trip offers you to experience the biggest holiday of Mongolian nomads, the Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian Lunar New Year, and prepare the traditional dishes for the ceremony with sheepherder families and celebrate the festival together. The first new moon of the calendar is scheduled every year depending on the lunisolar calendar or the movement of the moon, and it takes place at the end of January or February. Mongolian Lunar New Year is different from Lunar New Year holidays in other Asian countries, and its date occurs on a different day alone. The day of celebration is calculated according to Mongolian astrology. It is a festival that welcomes the spring after passing the tiring winter, and for the herdsmen, a celebration of the survival of their livestock in the harsh, long, and cold winter. During the Tsagaan Sar holiday, every Mongolian makes a new “deel”, a traditional costume, which is made of white or light-colored fabric and silk. On the festival table, pudding on the plate is also prepared with dairy products mainly white-colored. Families visit each other's homes and greet each other at the beginning of the New Year. During the trip, you will experience also how nomads live in winter.
