TAIGA’S WINTER

Upon your arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport at Khushig Valley, our friendly helpful team will welcome you at the airport. We drive to the tourist camp located 170km from the airport. There you spend a day familiarizing yourself with traditional nomadic culture and customs.

We arrive at Erdenet city which is the second largest and most populated city after Ulaanbaatar. The city was founded in 1974, and was built with the establishment of a factory using a large copper deposit called "Erdenetiin Ovoo". Erdenet plant is a large mining factory and copper concentrate and provides 30-40% of Mongolia's state budget. We take a rest and stay overnight in Erdenet.

We depart early in the morning to Murun city. On the way, you will see the famous extinct volcano crater Urantogoo Uul, and its unique formations. Then we arrive at Murun, the provincial capital of the Khuvsgul. This northern province leads Mongolia by its large number of livestock and population, as well as by its beautiful nature, such as Khuvsgul lake, Darkhad depression, wild forests, mountain plains, high mountains, white fish, deer, reindeer, and Darkhad breed white horses, etc. It is a province with many distinctive features.

On this day, we travel further to the Tsagaan Nuur sum, the closest sum (village) to the northern border of Mongolia. On the way, we pass through spiritual places such as "Ul Khalzan 13 ovoo mountain pass" and "Darkhad 13 ovoo" which are related to shamanism rituals. Inhabitants of Tsagaan Nuur sum are mainly from Uriankhia and some Tuva ethnic groups. They have a lifestyle adapted to taiga and forest. We take lunch with a reindeer herder family. You’ll get to know about the Tsaatan people’s way of life and enjoy riding on a reindeer around the natural beauty of the taiga.

On this day, we will travel to the Eastern Taiga and Renchinlkhumbe Sum area and arrive at a trending winter tourism destination, the shore of the Jargant River. The scenery of Khuvsgul province becomes more and more distinct as it goes to the north, and is said to be beautiful as the scenery of the mountains of Switzerland. This relatively remote and inaccessible land is not easy to reach and you have to travel a long way while testing your driving ability and endurance in the cold. Less than 5 km from the center of Renchinlkhumbe Sum, the Jargant River flows without freezing even at -60 degrees Celsius and you’ll be amazed when you see its green underwater life. The steam of the river will remind you of a fairytale land like in Narnia tales, where the river's trees are frozen and covered with snow and ice. The local people respect and cherished it as a "living river". The life at the bottom of the Jargant River, as well as its white sand, gravel, green leaves, and green algae, are visible from the shore. Meanwhile, you’ll see the extraordinary spectacular scene on the surface of the water, mirroring the trees covered with snow and ice. Then, we return to Renchinlkhumbe Sum before dinner and rest at a small local lodge.

After breakfast, we head to Ar Bosgot Gorge. The Bosgo River sourced from behind of Mount Delgerhaan, the highest point of the Khoridol Saridag mountain range, flows through the uniquely formed gorge. It is called Ar Bosgot Gorge, and it is a place where tourists are attracted anytime of winter and summer. We arrive at Lake Khuvsgul before dinner. It is considered the most fresh-water lake not only in Mongolia but also in Asia. Geologists believe that it is 262 m deep and is connected to Lake Baikal by an underground channel. In winter, the lake surface freezes more than 1 meter and it is amazing to see underwater life below its surface ice.

In the morning we take a rest at the shore of the lake and take a short tour by horse-drawn sleigh. After lunch, passing through the Khatgal village, we take ride to Murun city. From Murun, then visit the Uushigiin Uvur deer stone complex which is located 16km west of the Murun. In this sight, you can explore a line of 14 deer stones which were built for the leaders of the nomadic tribes of Bronze Age. There, also you can see a statue with a human face embossed which is thought an important monument that attracts the attention of tourists and scientists.

On this day, we will drive on return route and arrive at Erdenet city. After a long journey, you will rest comfortably at the hotel. In this city, which has been called the Youth Town or City of Friendship, thousands of experts from the Soviet and socialist countries worked and lived during Socialism period. So that, the it was called the city of friendship between countries. When its copper mine was established, many young Mongolians came to settle and work there, so it was called "Youth town".

Early morning, we drive back route and arrive at Aglag Buteel Monastery. It is a recently established monastery of the new era and is located on a slope of a beautiful rocky mountain surrounded by beautiful nature. Visit the "Unique exhibits" museum and get acquainted with the thangka and appliques in the church. The museum has special stuffed exhibits of various animals with interesting different shapes and forms which are not usual. Then, we take a walking tour outside the temple to see 30-40 rock carvings.

You will enjoy your final day of the trip in Ulaanbaatar city. City tour includes a visit to Sukhbaatar Square, the heart of the city, and Chingghis Khaan Museum, which is considered one of the best museums in Asia. Stopoing by the shopping centers and you may buy "Mongolian" souvenirs and cashmere products. In the end of the day, you arrive at the hotel and prepare for the departure.
