Overview

It is a horse trekking tour along the shores of Khuisiin Naiman nuur (Eight Lakes of Khuis river), located between the mountains formed behind the volcanic eruptions during the Quaternary period in the central part of Mongolia. At the beginning of the trip, we visit Kharkhorin which once served as the capital city of the Mongolian empire. There we see its relics and landmarks left by great history. At the end of the tour, you will ride two-humped camels, which are very rare in the world, and hike along the top of the beautiful sand dunes. Apart from experiencing thousands of years of the nomadic way of life, travelers will have a chance to get to know the culture and history of Mongolian Buddhism and visit the newly established Chinggis Khan Museum, and its Mongolian historical exhibits. This trip is an exciting and adventurous tour that will challenge your courage, agility and, resilience.

DAY 1: Chinggis Khaan Airport – UB (60 km)

Upon your arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport at Khushig Valley, our friendly professional team will welcome you at the airport. (Depending on your arrival time, we will plan a city tour)

DAY 2: UB - City tour

Take a city sightseeing tour. We visit the Chinggis Khaan museum, the Mongolian Buddhism center Megjid Janraisag Temple in Gandantegchilen Monastery, and the central square, etc. A recently established Chinggis Khan Museum has 92% of original exhibits and we visit its 6 halls within 2 hours and see the brilliant collection of artifacts and listen to wonderful history of Mongolia.

DAY 3: Kharkhorin (360 km)

Early morning after breakfast, travelers head to Kharkhorin which was the ancient capital of the Mongolian empire. We visit the Kharkhorin museum and see the archeological artifacts of ancient Karakorum. During dinner, we watch the traditional music concert and spend a pleasant evening there.

DAY 4: Arvaikheer city - Shuranga tsokhio stone (230 km)

In the morning, we visit the Erdene Zuu monastery which was built in 1586. After Ming dynasty troops occupied and later razed the ancient capital Karakorum, the city could not be rebuilt. But the Erdene Zuu Monastery was built in 1586 with the various construction materials taken from the ruin of Karakorum and it stands near current Kharkhorin. Then, we drive to Uvurkhangai province’s center Arvaikheer city. Take lunch there and we visit “The Great horse temple of the Mongolian people” located 15km from Arvaikheer. From there, we head to the Uyanga sum and see the Shuranga Tsokhio (Shuranga Cliff). This is 28 meters high cliff, and it is said in a folktale that if you can throw a stone over the top of the cliff, you will have countless horses and cattle.

DAY 5: Shireet mountain pass – Eight Lake (Khuisiin Naiman Nuur) (by horse 20 km)

After early breakfast, we load our luggage on the yaks and start horse trekking through the Eight Lake shore. We trek through the Shireet and Tusheet mountain passes which are elevated 3000 meters above sea level. Take lunch there. Then we see the Shireet, the Mukhar, the Khaliut, the Bugat, the Khaya, the Shanaa, the Khuis, the Duruu, and the Bayan lakes. These 8 lakes are located from 500 m to 3000m from each other and are connected by underground tunnels. Scientists believe that they formed behind volcanic eruptions during the Quaternary period. We stay overnight camping at the lakeshore.

DAY 6: Buurug valley (Buurugiin Khundii) – Orkhon waterfall (by horse 35 km)

On this day, we continue horse trekking and cross the Bodon mountain pass and reach the Buurug valley. We take lunch there and get off our luggage from the yaks to our car. And we continue riding a horse through the valley and arrive at the Orkhon waterfall. This waterfall falls from the 24 meters lava cliffs of the Ulaan River into the deep of ravine hole in the middle of the plain ground. The Ulaan River originates from the Khangai mountain range in Central Mongolia. Its water flows into the Baikal Lake through the two big rivers.

DAY 7: Tovkhon monastery (by horse 45 km)

After breakfast, we head by horse trekking to one of Mongolia's oldest Buddhist monasteries, Tovkhon monastery on the border of Ovorkhangai and Arkhangai provinces in central Mongolia. The monastery is located on the top of the mountain and surrounded by forests. In 1648, the 14-year-old Zanabazar, the first Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, leader of Mongolian Buddhism, spiritual leader of Khalkha Mongol, gifted sculptor, and painter determined this auspicious location on the Shireet Ulaan Uul mountain overlooking a hill at 2,600 meters above sea-level and first established the Tovkhon Monastery. Ondor Gegeen Zanabazar lived and worked in the monastery for over 30 years creating his famous artworks, inventing Soyombo script and, meditating. This day we lodge in a tourist camp in the foothills of Shireet Uul mountain.

DAY 8: Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes (220 km)

Early morning after breakfast, from the tourist camp we ride a horse 5km to the Tovkhon monastery. First, the monastery had 14 temples, but most of them were destroyed later. On the backside of the monastery, there is a cave named “mother’s womb” on the 20 meters high cliff. At the top of the mountain is a rock-hewn mound that only men are allowed to climb. Touching the worshipped pile symbolizes that the spirit will be lifted up and get energized. On the way back, we descend from the monastery riding a horse. After 4 days horse trekking, we return our horses to their home and drive a car to Elsen Tasarkhai (Mongol Els sand dunes).

DAY 9: UB (280 km)

In the morning, we ride a camel, walk on sand dunes, and relax in beautifully serene nature. It is 80 km long and 5 km wide dunes surrounded by low hills covered with rare bushes and a small forest near a river. After lunch, we depart for Ulaanbaatar city.

DAY 10: Chinggis Khaan Airport (60 km)

Our team transfers guests to the airport. Travelers take a return flight to the respective country from the Chinggis Khaan International Airport.
